Laser surgery

Astigmatism occurs because the cornea has more curative in one direction or meridian than in the other.  Instead of being spherical in shape like a basketball, the cornea is shaped more like a football, and this causes distortion of vision which is called astigmatism

Nobody has a perfectly shaped cornea, but the distortion of most eyes is so slight that it does not significantly affect the quality of vision.  However, a significant degree of astigmatism can result in major focusing problems.  Astigmatism scan occur by itself but often occurs in conjunction with nearsightedness and farsightedness.

Corrective Surgical Techniques

Laser skin care and Since nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are caused by anatomical factors (too long, too short, or distortion) for most people the best way to overcome or

improve their focusing abilities is to surgically alter the shape of the cornea.  This is preferable to more invasive procedures because it does not involve entering the ye and because the cornea is so accessible in Surgical techniques.

For many years, since the mid 1970’s, radial keratotomy (RK) and astigmatic keratotomy (AK) were the only techniques readily available to change the shape of the cornea.  By use of controlled incisions on the cornea, low amounts of nearsightedness and astigmatism could be corrected in Surgical techniques.

Laser skin care and people needing moderate to high ranges of correction were left without a reliable solution until the advent of advanced laser surgery.  Not only is radial keratotomy limited in its effectiveness but fluctuations in vision may occur after the surgery because the incisions penetrate 90% of the cornea, which can cause weakness of the lens in Surgical techniques.

What are the laser surgery alternatives for the correction of visual acuity?

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a surgical procedure effective in correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  PRK was first performed in Berlin, Germany in 1987.  Since that time, hundreds of thousands of people around the world have found a new visual freedom through laser surgery.

After extensive analysis of the eye, surgeons and technicians work together to program an excimer laser to vaporize away microscopic layers of corneal tissue.  With a modified curvature, focusing problems are reduced or eliminated.

The excimer laser is a unique type of ‘cold’ laser that does not burn or cut tissue.  Instead, it gently breaks the molecular bonds between cells so that controlled amounts of tissue can be literally vaporized away, one microscopic layer at a time.

Laser skin care and when using PRK to correct nearsightedness, the curvature of the cornea is reduced centrally.  For the correction of farsightedness, the tissue is reshaped on the periphery of the cornea.  To correct astigmatism, more tissue is removed from some parts of the cornea than others to even out the curvature.  In most cases, only 10 to 15% of the thickness of the cornea is removed.  Eyes usually heal well, and the results re very satisfactory, with most people achieving normal of near normal natural vision.

Who Qualifies for PRK?

To be a candidate for surgery, you must meet each of the following qualifications:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age,
  2. Have visual acuity problems that are in a correctable range.
  3. Have had stable vision of one year.  Very slight prescription changes may be acceptable.
  4. Have eyes free from complicating injuries and diseases, and
  5. Must not be pregnant or nursing.
