Cosmetic surgery is generally reported to have been performed since the nineteenth century.

With the first nose job- the focal point of the earliest procedures – supposedly performed in Berlin in the mid – 1800s.

An otoplasty to fix protruding ears was undertaken in Manhattan in 1895 and the first breast enlargement

and tummy tuck tires about the same time. Eyelid treatments and facelifts followed.

But earlier cosmetic surgery was apparently carried out by

An Italian Plastic Surgery on the sixteenth century. Tagliocezzi, who reportedly said of his profession.

‘We restore, repair and make whole those parts which nature has given, but which fortune, or time,

Has taken away, not so much that they may delight the eye but that they may buoy up the spirit and help the mind of the afflicted in the Cosmetic Surgery. According to leading cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vincent Giampapa, ‘nose jobs’ were known thousands of years ago in the East. The mind boggles at how they were done, thought!

Early facelifts had to be repeated to be effective, with Marlene Dietrich in her later days reported to have stuck hat pins into her scalp beneath her wig to prevent sagging! Eleanor Lambert, the ninety something compiler of the International Best Dressed List, has admitted to having ‘a few nips and tucks’. She told Victoria. ‘I think cosmetic surgery is a very important weapon in a woman’s arsenal, but only up to the age of sixty – five. After that age you should avoid having unnecessary anesthetic. The important thing is to keep your marbles! A lot of women are so keen to keep the face going that their minds go. Cosmetic Surgery and the Duchess of Windsor had a facelift at eighty two and was never the same afterwards, ‘claims Lambert, whose own mind remained razor sharp.

Facing the Music

At forty – seven, my skin looked it age if not older. Like many of my generation. I was a late convert to the benefits of skin care and spent many a summer slathered in baby oil to develop the teak coloured glow so desirable in the sixties and seventies. It probably wasn’t until my late twenties or early thirties that I can honestly say that I bothered with a twice daily natural of cleansing, toning and moisturizing in the Natural skin care.

I still abused my skin through my thirties. At every chance the sun shone. I was out in it unprotected, dismissing the ultraviolet rays in Britain as not worth the bother. At least once a year for the past fifteen we have escaped the bleak greyness of Blighty for the Caribbean, the Far East or Africa – anywhere just to see some sun! I would ‘prepare’ my skin for the sun with a half dozen blasts on a tanning bed to enable me to stay in the sun longer on holiday without worrying about burning Ha! What mad rationalizations we can invent. I might not have been burning my skin but I was certainly accelerating its ageing through my sun worship in the natural skin care.

As the forties took their grip, so too did other changes to my face, changes that not so much announces my age, which I honestly don’t give a hoot about, but rather, made me look glum. Natural skin care and the most distressing to me was the appearance of fine lines around my mouth which I would learn were the result of both too much sun and having a very animated face. Also, for years I have whistled for my dogs, which has developed lines equivalent to being a three pack a day smoker!
