There is no need to pay undue attention to the maintenance of water level in the body.  For that it is desirable to trust different systems functioning in the body. 

As shown earlier, fat persons perspire profusely and consequently they feel a bit more thirsty.  There is no reason why this thirst should not be quenched.

Similarly, if a fat person is not suffering from high-blood pressure or gradual congestive cardiac failure, he need not stop consuming salt altogether.

  If the heart and the kidneys are functioning properly, excess water and salt are automatically eliminated from the body. 

However, excess consumption of salt, for making the food tastier, is not at all desirable. 

It must be borne in mind that one gram of salt is responsible for retention of 60 grams water in the body in the Maintenance of diet

Dr. Newburgh has shown through his research that the water and the salt level may cause variations in the day to day weight, but they don’t have any long-ranging effect on the weight in the Maintenance of diet.

Synopsis:

  1. Weight-loss occurs only when the expenditure of calories (energy) exceeds the intake of calories.
  2. Dieting is the most effective remedial measure for losing weight.
  3. Diet should be so planned that:
  4. There is reduction in weight.
  5. The body is not deprived of any of the essential nutrients.
  6. Proper eating habits are cultivated.
  7. Slimming diet should be so planned that the body continues to get everyday about 50 to 6o gm of protein, about 100 gm of carbohydrates and about 40 to 50 gm of fat.  Besides this, adequate supply of vitamins and minerals should be obtained from fruits, raw vegetables, sprouted wheat and sprouted pulses.

Dr. Pilkington,-8 Dr.Oleson and Dr.Quaade say that the initial weight-loss that occurs after putting the patient on a fat-rich diet is illusive, as it is mainly a result of elimination of water and fluids from the body. 

If a patient deviates from this diet programme even once and takes carbohydrates, his weight suddenly jacks up. 

Besides that, the argument about the balanced diet that was presented during the course of the discussion on the protein is equally applicable herein the Healthy diet plan.

Vitamins: During the period of dieting, the food should contain plenty of raw vegetables and fruits.  The body gets adequate quantity of vitamins and minerals from them. 

Vegetables contain low calories and yet they fill up the stomach and give the feeling of satiety.

Thereafter the person does not feel hungry for sometime.  Moreover, fibers contained in the vegetables and fruits prevent and remove constipation. 

Vitamin deficiency does not occur if a person continues to take adequate quantity of milk and sprouted wheat.  However, if the need arises, vitamins can be taken in the synthetic form also.

Minerals: Among the various minerals, calcium and iron are more important.  Milk supplies us with the necessary calcium and green leafy vegetables supply the iron. 

If the need be, iron can be taken in the synthetic form (in the form of pills).  If the symptoms of anemia develop, more iron should be taken in the Healthy diet plan.

Water and salt:  There was a time when fat persons were advised to drink less amount of water. 

But scientific research has now shown that there is no logical reason for doing so.  But fat persons should certainly avoid sweet drinks and soft drinks in the Healthy diet plan.
